FIBRE OPTIC – SPEED OF LIGHT EQUIPMENT Description and Specifications for Lab Tenders
FIBRE OPTIC SPEED OF LIGHT EQUIPMENT.
FIBRE OPTIC – SPEED OF LIGHT EQUIPMENT This kit is used to measure the speed of light directly with
an easily understandable method. Moreover the value of the
speed if light in air can be compared to that developed in the
plastic of a fibre optic cable to calculate the index of refraction.
This equipment enables to carry out a wide range of tests.
TRAINING PROGRAM
• calculating the speed of light
• studying the basic principles of fibre optics
• actual applications of fibre optics
• realization of a wide range of experiments
This equipment includes a transmitter and a receiver, two
Fresnel lenses with lens holder, a mirror, power supply unit,
connection cables.
The transmitter includes a high-intensity LED with pulses of 1
MHz and it supplies the oscilloscope with a sync pulse.
The trajectory of the light pulse is displayed as Y1 on the
oscilloscope. The light pulse is sent to the receiver where the
signal is displayed as Y2. This test will be carried out twice :
the first time, with transmitter and receiver aligned directly at
a distance of 1 metre, then the test is repeated with pulses
crossing the laboratory up to the mirror where they are
reflected backwards.
Measuring the difference of position of trace Y2 in the two
cases and the time (usually, 0.1 μs) spent in coming back
through laboratory (generally, 30 m) will enable to determine
the speed of light.
